Brookside High Prom Bulletin

Welcome to Brookside High's official blog!

This is THE place to experience student life at our school. Because this isn't just a place for me to express MY point of view - Brookside students and faculty also get a chance to post Tweets, texts and videos of their own.

Think of it as our school's living yearbook. Don't forget to subscribe! This is one club you're going to want to be a part of.

Seniors are giddy at the sweet smell of impending freedom.
Or that’s the smell of burning chemicals from the science lab.
Either way, giddy.
In other news:
  • School is almost over. Though I’ve been over it for a while,
  • Memories last forever. Don’t forget to get your yearbook signed by people you’ll never see again.
  • If you’re sad about leaving Brookside, don’t hug me.
  • Seniors: Right now, the Freshman class is hard at work assembling a duplicate copy of you for their purposes. They will succeed.
  • Principal Dunnan give a speech at graduation. In that time, the world will turn, species will die and - if you’ve practiced like me - you can catch a serious nap.
  • I’m not the person you think I am. It probably goes the other way, too.
  • Yeah, that thing you heard about me is true – I care about something. Good thing school’s out tomorrow. My reputation will never recover.

"Seniors rule. You knew that already, but for one night it's official."
- Tyler Barso

"Well, for the girls . . . we all dream of being Prom Queen, right? For the guys, it seems to be more of a formality."

"I don't know. Promise? Promotion? Prompt? Prominent? Prometheus? Wow, I kind of hope it's that last one. Cause, cool, fire."

Spring Break. Winter Break. Summer Break. We love these, right? Why?
We get to kick back for a bit . . . relax. But what else happens?

Glasses come off. Braces come off. Skin clears up. The whole deal . . . Suddenly, Brookside has a whole new batch of hot chicks.
There’s a name for that . . . what is it?
ATTRACT-IVATION!!!!

So, who are the most likely candidates for Attract-ivation? Sophomores!
Every once in a while you get an over-achieving freshman or a senior surprise, but the sophomore class is where you have the highest rate of Attract-ivation.

So, here’s what we’re going to do . . . we’re going to give a few shout-outs to some special ladies who have recently been . . . ATTRACT-IVATIED!!!!!

Nicole Rogers: The best thing you ever did was get rid of that funky little perm you had. It made all the difference. You’ve been Attract-ivated!

Sarita Anderson: Who knew glasses were holding you back so much? It’s like we can see you clearly for the first time, now that you’re Attract-ivated!

Michelle Perry: I always thought your freckles were weird, but I now I think they’re cute in a weird way. I guess that means you’ve been Attract-ivated!

Marissa Mendez: My dad pointed you out at a lacrosse game recently . . . that’s an Attract-ivation right there!

Simone Daniels: Those braces weren’t ideal, but now they’re gone . . . so let’s forget about them. Because you are Attracti-vated!

Layla Archer: I know that car accident was really tough for you, but I gotta say, you came out of it smoking hot . . . a serious Attract-ivation!

All right, ladies who were left out . . . don’t be sad . . . an Attract-ivation can happen at any time. But it has a lot to do with a new haircut.

The student parking lot puts the "haves" and the "have-nots" out on full display. Unfortunately, despite your particular social standing, we all still "have" to come here.

In other news:

- A teacher invents a weird acronym to help his students learn something. Everyone remembers he wrote "N.E.R.D. C.R.I.M.E.S." on the chalkboard, but no one remembers what that means.
- They say the kids sleeping in the back of the room are slackers, but what if they're really dreaming of a better tomorrow?
- A kid is injured for doing a dumb thing and lands in the hospital. We all have to pretend the dumb thing didn't happen and he fell out of that truck doing homework.
- The Prom committee has chosen a theme, but they have yet to choose a better way to spend their time.
- The computer lab puts the world at your fingertips. Don't touch the wrong things.

So how did you guys meet?
Tyler:  She was lookin’ at me.  I mean, they’re always looking.
Jordan:  I glanced over…
Tyler:  And so, I told my crew, “check it.”  Walked up, smiled and that’s that!
Jordan:  Um…  You pestered me for weeks.  I finally gave in.
Tyler:  Shhhh, baby girl. You’ll give away the mystery.

What’s your favorite part of your relationship?
Jordan: I like when it’s just us.
Tyler:  For me, it’s the way people look at us. They know what’s up.

What’s in your future?
Jordan:  College. Visiting Tyler on the weekends!
Tyler:  Next year’s so far away, baby.  Let’s deal with it when we deal with it…  When the time comes.

Are you going to Prom?
Jordan: Definitely. This is the night I have always dreamed of, ever since I was a little girl. I’m so excited to walk in the door with Tyler.
Tyler:  Everyone is gonna be in awe of us.  There have been prom kings and queens, but when we win - and we will win – it’s gonna be the stuff of Brookside legends for years to come . .

Prom fever is contagious here at Brookside High. So is the flu. Both made me sick this week in their own special way.

In other news:

- A teacher gives a pop quiz. First period surprised. Other periods are warned. Lesson learned – never be on the front lines.

- For 100 dollars you can rent a tuxedo. This investment buys the right to treat your date to dinner.

- A teacher thinks it’s funny to use a toilet seat as a bathroom pass. Would be horrified to know how many times it has been used as intended.

- At Brookside, the word “prom” was spoken over 5,000 times last week. The word “mathematics” was muttered twice.

- The word “friend” devalued to “guy I met at party that one time”.

- Naps in class earn you a detention. Naps in detention earn you another detention. Suspension means you can nap at home.

Dear Hallways,

Why must you be so crowded at all times?

Maybe it’s the Prom posters going up everywhere.
Maybe it’s the Varsity lacrosse team hazing the new members.
Maybe it’s all the breakups that, for some reason, have to take place right in the middle of everything.

It’s a good thing I’m short. I can kind of cruise underneath it all. But you should really be more considerate to the tall kids.

Love,
Tess

So, Prom is getting closer and closer.

As head of the Prom Planning Committee, I’m thinking about place settings and DJ playlists. But everyone else is thinking about one thing . . .

A date.

No question – this is the most pressure-filled date situation in your whole life! Because you will always remember your Prom date.

And you’ll always remember how he asked you.

What if Prom is your first date? Yikes! As if the regular kind weren’t awkward enough . . .

Okay, so I’m thinking a little bit about dates, too.

What’s your favorite thing about Brookside High?
Mei: It’s dumb to say my boyfriend, right? So, art class. Which we have together.
Justin: Mei is a really amazing artist.
Mei: He’s my boyfriend. He has to say that.
Justin: Seriously, though. She’s great. When she gets the nerve to seriously pursue it. I’ll be her biggest supporter.

Any tips for on how to be a great class couple?
Justin: It’s important to be individuals, but we’re really strongest as a couple.
Mei: For instance, you should have seen Justin before I started dressing him.

What are your plans for the future?
Mei: First, Justin and I are going to go to college together – Michigan. Maybe three years in, we’ll move in together - but not tell my parents - and then, definitely, get a wrinkle puppy. We’ll name him Parsons. After that, who knows?
Justin: There’s actually a lot more to this plan, but she’s playing it cool right now.

What does Prom mean to you as a couple?
Justin: We’re closing a chapter in our lives. And starting a new one.
Mei: Also, it means Justin is going to do something super-sweet to ask me to Prom.

Any last advice?
Justin: When you find something you really love, hold onto it.
Mei: Awwwww!

“Is there a law against riding elephants or something? Because that would be AMAZING” – Dorian Shea, Senior

Today in Brookside Campus Life:

- That Prom Girl is taking submissions from students for the Prom poster. I have a feeling my folded-notebook-paper-with-chewing-gum-in-it submission is gonna make it!

- Students continue to get excited every day tater tots are served in the cafeteria.

- A teacher tries to use a word he learned from his daughter. Does it wrong. Awkward silence ensues.

- A guy asks a girl to Prom. She says yes. People get excited like it didn’t just happen to someone else yesterday and won’t happen again tomorrow.

- I’m written up for “excessive and unauthorized pantomime” – this is not a real thing. Principal Dunnan threatens this might appear on my permanent record. I tell him we might both want to consider the ramifications of that.

- The Internet allows us to share things.

IS IT OKAY TO DATE YOUR FRIEND'S EX?

"No, definitely not! I did that once and it caused nothing but trouble. Sure it was fun for a while, going to the movies and mall and stuff, but when my friend found out I was hanging out with his ex, he went ballistic! Dude, it's no fun to pick up after a TP raid. Just try explaining that to your parents."
- Don Harvey, Senior

"Life is too short to worry about what your friends thing. Maybe that's why I don't have many."
- Mason Patel, Junior

"The heart wants what the heart wants."
- Erin Underwood, Senior

What do you think Brookside High will be like in ten years?

“I’m excited to find out. I’m already looking forward to the ten-year reunion. Which is good, because I guess I’ll be planning that, too.”
- Nova Prescott

“If the people who spilled out of the reunion last week are any indication - fatter.”
- Jesse Richter

“The stuff I know about this place, I’ll be surprised if it’s still standing in ten years. But probably, more computers.”
- Ali Gomez

“It’s been around for like a hundred, right? So, like, ten percent different?”
- Rolo

It’s important to take the time and get to know your school.

I don’t mean that in the “This is the best school ever!!!!!” type way, either.

Let me give you an example:

Next time you’re in science class, look in the back of the room. There’s a door. When no one’s looking - go in that door. That door leads to someplace amazing. It’s some kind of shared storeroom for all of the science classes.

It’s gonna smell weird. Push past the smell.

You’ll see crazy models, skeletons, telescopes. Probably some weird old steampunkish projectors.

You never knew this stuff was back there, did you? Get to know your school.

If there’s one thing I’ve learned in my four year run at Brookside High, it’s that everyone will root for the football team no matter how bad they are.

Looking back, I really should have learned more than that. Thanks, Brookside.

WHAT MAKES A SUCCESSFUL STUDY DATE?

“Study dates? For success? Body spray. Her mind will be thinking about Ethan Frome, But her nose? Thinking about you.”
- Max King, senior

“Study dates are for studying. At least that’s what my mom told me.”
- Chelsea McCoy, freshman

“I am the queen of study dates. Start off in a group. Lay the groundwork, and then split off into partners to do more in-depth study. Never fails.”
- Michele Murray, junior

“What? Study dates? Are those real things that happen?”
- Steven Jones, junior
