WHO ARE YOU GOING WITH?

“I’m going with my girlfriend who lives in Canada. Oh, man. I haven’t checked to see if she needs a ride.”
– Rolo

“Well, I’ve heard that the person who plans the Prom kind of goes with the entire class. I heard that from my Mom, and it was in her ‘supportive voice’ . . . so, I don’t know yet.”
– Nova Prescott

“What? And spoil the surprise?”
– Tyler Barso

“I appreciate the help, but I’ll handle the gossip around here, okay? By the way, I just found out my date’s parents went to Prom together. So, that might set up some unrealistic expectations.”
 – Ali Gomez

“Your guess is as good as mine.”
– Lloyd Taylor

All right, guys. This is it . . . crunch time.

Try not to panic – there are several hundred girls in your school.

They can’t ALL have dates already, right?

Right?

Here’s hoping.

And here’s some ideas on scoring that last-minute date to Prom:

  • Stand outside the back door. When a girl opens the door, position yourself so you get hit in the face by the door. She’ll feel so bad that she will have to take you to Prom. Also, you’ll need to learn something about eye make-up after that.
  • Go to the local movie theater and buy a ticket for a romantic comedy. Sit next to a random girl in the theatre and do whatever she does – laugh, cry, all of it. She’ll think you’re the most sensitive guy around!
  • Time to expand your search. Go somewhere where people gather: The mall. The grocery store. The DMV. Try out your Prom asks on some new faces.
  • Transform your appearance. Haircut, spray tan, maybe some colored contacts – if they don’t recognize you, you can re-ask some girls who turned you down before!
  • Okay, go with me on this one – take out your cell phone. Go through the address book. Call every girl in there. Leave out “Mom” and “Grandma”, but everyone else is fair game. Oh, and don’t call my sister Tess. That would be weird. How would you have her number anyway?

Dear Prom,

I might not be able to attend you this year, or probably the year after or the year after that, but that doesn’t mean I’m not still TOTALLY PSYCHED FOR YOU!!

Sorry. Ahem.

It’s just that when I think about you, my stomach does little flips. Like the nervous excited kind, not like the gymnastics kind. And watching the anticipation build in the hallways has just been getting me more and more excited!

Then I remember that I’m not going, and I’m a little less excited. But only a little!

When my turn rolls around, I don’t want to be unprepared. For instance, this weekend I might have tried on a few Prom dresses . . . just a couple! After all, it’s important to know your colors and what works for you!

Periwinkle blue? NOT my color.

So, Prom – I look forward to meeting you one day.

Love,

Tess

P.S. You know my brother, Lloyd, right? Does that ring any bells? Well, he still needs a date, so if you could just cut him a break . . . that would be amazing.

Five. Days.

After years of looking forward to this, months and months of planning, and weeks of bringing it all together, all that remains between us and Prom is . . . five days.

Can you believe it?

Everything is coming together (except for the date – but we knew that, right?) and I’m ready to finally just experience Prom night . . . our last night as a class.

This is the beginning of my Prom story . . . and, although the date thing is, well, a thing . . . there’s something exciting about not knowing how my story Prom story will wind up.

Someone out there will be my last dance. And they don’t know it yet. I don’t know it yet. But I know this . . . it will be something I’ll always remember.

Also, it will be at 10:55 pm. Principal Dunnan has been really clear about that.

Lucas100: Let’s talk about Prom. People want to know about Prom, right?
StickHippoROCKS97: Dude, we can’t even go to Prom.
Lucas100: I know, but as music geeks, we owe it to the school to talk about music at Prom.
Lucas100: Like, a Prom playlist for instance.
StickHippoROCKS97: You sound like a girl.
Lucas100: Dude just help me out here!
StickHippoROCKS97: OK, OK. Um. Playlist.
StickHippoROCKS97: Just fill that thing up with the best of Stick Hippo.
Lucas100:  Stick Hippo isn’t appropriate for everything, Corey.
Lucas100: Like, if you’re driving your date to Prom. You need something romantic. Like, smooth jazz? Probably not smooth jazz.
StickHippoROCKS97: Stick Hippo.
StickHippoROCKS97: “Megafauna” from the first album
Lucas100: What about when you’re at dinner – maybe some power ballads?
StickHippoROCKS97: Stick Hippo.
StickHippoROCKS97: “Pliny the Elder” (Live Version)
Lucas100: Or maybe when Prom is over and you’re on your way home.
Lucas100: Perfect ending to a night: sleepy indie lullabies?
StickHippoROCKS97: Stick Hippo.
StickHippoROCKS97: Deep cut. B-side of the ‘Graviportal’ 7” called “The Jambles”
Lucas100: I don’t think this is gonna work.

Still dateless? Yeah, me too. But don’t let it get you down. These little setbacks are called “character building” . . .

But hopefully not in the way that people say, “Yeah! He’s such a character!” . . . because I think that’s pretty much another way to say dateless.

Anyway, here’s a few last-minute Prom ask tips:

  • Girls like a smart guy, so catch up on the classics. For reference: Catcher In The Rye - classic. Spiderman’s “Clone Saga” – not a classic.
  • You know that funny dance-floor move where the guy swings the imaginary lasso, ropes a girl and drags her over to him. Does not work.
  • It's one thing to try to spark a connection when asking a stranger for a date. It’s another thing to start off with, “You remind me of my mom!” . . . for the record, that other thing is bad.
  • Sunglasses and a leather jacket. It works for guys in the movies. A jet might come in handy, too.
  • It's down to the wire, but don’t give up! Keep looking. There’s gotta be a girl out there as desperate as you are.

Dear Senior Girls,

It sounds silly, but as soon as I started my high school career (um, this year), I started thinking about Prom.

To some, it may just be a party. But to me, it’s something different . . . it’s like four years of romance and excitement and drama all rolled into one night! And it’s going to be amazing… If you get to go.

I might be a freshman, but I still know more about Prom than my stepbrother Lloyd. You’ve probably heard of him. He’s the one who dressed up in a bear suit to ask Julie Scinto to Prom. Yeah, I know.

Watching Lloyd make Prom preparations is like watching a baby bird get pushed out of a nest over and over again. In case you are wondering, he can’t fly.

I know he needs a little work, but could ONE of you ladies please find some kindness in your heart and say “yes” when he asks you?

And believe me if he hasn’t asked yet, he will.

Love,

Tess

If you’re dateless like me, there’s just over two weeks left to find a date for Prom. The bad news? The odds aren’t looking great.

The good news? I won’t get through all of my ask ideas, so here’s some extras:

  • Learn her class schedule. We have five minutes between classes, so run to her next class, stand near the door and let out a big laugh right when she walks in. Even if you aren’t talking to anyone. You’re the “fun guy.”
  • Act like you have a dramatic secret in your past. Keep referring to “that thing that I saw . . . “ before trailing off. Maybe she’ll be intrigued enough to go to Prom with you!
  • Make a big deal about how you work out. Keep talking about all the curls and crunches you can do. Also, carry around a protein shake.
  • Arm casts = sympathy. When she asks to sign it, ask her to throw her number on there, too. No fake leg injuries, though. Leg cast = no dancing.
  • Flown under the radar at school so far? Use that to your advantage! Every girl loves the “Sexy Foreign Exchange Student.” Master an accent and impress her with tales of hunting wolves, owning a goat and going to “Happening European night clubs".
  • My grandma tells me that 100 ‘no’s = 1 ‘yes’, although that’s the kind of thinking that made her lose all that money in Vegas.

Man, you guys know me. I’m all about having relaxed clothes and comfy kicks.

But Prom is different. You’ve got to be the man she wants.

Prom is about being an alternate universe version of yourself . . . You know, like, “Hey, here’s what I might be like in the future if this Prom thing takes off and this date situation turns into true love.”

So that means I’ve got to raise my game: Get myself a tuxedo and some shiny shoes. Get some kind of tie. Maybe shave. That kind of stuff.

I mean, don’t lose your personality altogether – that’s what she likes about you.

And maybe your car. In my case, it’s just the first one. My car won’t make it all the way to Canada to visit my girlfriend, so I wind up on the bus a lot.

Although, a bus is like a super-big car, so maybe she likes that, too.

#Prom Q of the Day: Who is your ideal Prom date? Go ahead, call them out!Mon Apr 11 20:47:45 via web

What is up, our little Brotegés? Can you handle the knowledge?

Prom is going to be a night that you’ll never forget.

Especially if your secret girlfriend shows up and thinks she’s your date, too . . . How do you handle this situation?

It’s important to keep them apart. Look, we know you’re thinking “CAT FIGHT!” But that thing isn’t as cool as you think. They’ll both look busted when it’s over. So, there’s three strategies to employ here.

The first one we call, “She’s Crazy!”
If one of them catches wind . . . just point at the other and say, “She’s Crazy!”

If that doesn’t work, go to plan two . . . You’re Crazy!”
If you put it like that, they might just reconsider.

What’s the third option? Go Crazy.”
You should probably just leave them both. Hang with your bros. Find another girl.

Prom is where chicks look their hottest. There’s also a lot of drama. Couples break up.  See what you can do to move that along.  That’s what we call  . . .

A rebound.
So in closing, try to clean up at Prom like you clean up on the court.
