  • “Everything! I love it here so much. The classes, the people, the teachers, everything. Everything except the second-floor bathrooms in the science building. Those are terrible.”

SCHOOL’S OUT ON FRIDAY. WHAT’S NEXT?

“Thank You notes for graduation gifts. Ali’s doing FB messages, but I can’t do that. Then I’m going to pick out a nice frame for my diploma. Maybe some kind of shadow box so I can include my cap and tassle? Something mom and dad can feel proud about. Then I need to thing dorm decor. I’m feeling “purple and dusky rose” as a nice, cheery color scheme. I’ll be working this summer, but I’ve got to find a job first. It would be good to get started on the reading list for Freshman English.  I don’t know why that professor hasn’t e-mailed me back yet.  Am I too eager?  Some people, well a certain person, tells me to try and stay in the moment.  I’ll work on that too.”

Okay, so.

Here’s the thing about Prom.

Forget all about your expectations right when you walk through the door . . . because Prom is all about the moment.

I’ve spent so much time and energy imagining what that moment would be like.

And maybe I’ll spend the same time and energy thinking about what it was like.

But nothing . . . nothing is the same as the moment itself.

Forget your expectations and you’ll have a Prom that’s better than you ever imagined.

That’s Prom.

Well, I’ve got to wrap up here. Graduation. Summer Job. College. Yikes!

I’ve got a lot of planning to do.

You know how the night before Christmas you just lie awake . . . so excited about the day to come . . . so filled with anticipation of everyone opening the presents you spent weeks picking out . . . so restless you can’t sleep a wink?


So you get up and decide to redecorate the entire living room just to see the look of surprise on everyone’s face when they walk into the living room?


Okay, that last one might just be me.


But it’s also exactly how I feel about Prom. Only, it’s not tomorrow, you guys . . . We still have 11 days to go!


Containing that excitement and maintaining face through the next couple weeks will be difficult. But, I can do it. I can do it.


And I really need to get some sleep. There are only so many cardboard stars I can make at three in the morning. Oh! I’ve said too much.

Years from now, when I think about my Prom - will I think about the night itself or the year I spent planning it?


To be honest, I'm kind of fine either way because I've had a really amazing time.


Which is good, because from the looks of my only-half-completed to-do list, there are still plenty of amazing times left to be had.

You know what I think I like most about Prom? It only happens ONCE.

Wait, I just read that over. That sounded wrong.

I don’t mean that I’m glad that Prom will never happen again . . . I mean that I love that Prom is a once-in-a-lifetime event.

Look, later on, you might think of your wedding day as the best day of your life.

But not everyone gets married. Everyone can go to Prom.

Some people get married five or six times. But there’s only one Prom.

Oh, wow. That’s awful. What’s wrong with me? I’d better stop writing this.

So, I have this notebook.

If you know me, you’ve seen it around. It’s pretty serious.

Inside that notebook . . . is Prom.

This is almost a year in the making. . A lot of past Prom committees have waited until the spring to put something together and it’s been a little bit of a let-down. I don’t want that to happen this year. You can’t plan prom in two weeks. You just can’t.


Throughout the year, I’ve been filling with the Prom plans as they come together:

Menu suggestions for catering, Playlist for the DJ, Sample ballots for Prom Court, Seating arrangement templates, Decoration ideas, Budgets, Prom Poster art.

I really should have splurged on that extra-half-inch binder.

The best part of planning Prom is knowing that everyone will get to see all the hard work come together! There’s still a lot to do, but I know it’s going to be amazing.

The committee is working so hard – I want to take a moment right now to thank you guys. Ali, thank you for your constant flow of ideas. Mei, thanks for having such great taste. Brandon, thanks for always knowing the most practical way to put the ideas together And Rolo, thanks for . . . um . . . well, just being you.

So get excited, guys – I can’t wait for you to see what we have planned!

Except for that rumor about the elephant – that’s not true. Sorry.
