WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO MISS MOST ABOUT BROOKSIDE AFTER YOU GRADUATE?

  • “Everything! I love it here so much. The classes, the people, the teachers, everything. Everything except the second-floor bathrooms in the science building. Those are terrible.”
– Nova Prescott

  • “I don’t know. I kind of feel like I know everything there is to know here. Brookside’s pretty tapped out - all that’s left is crusty old teacher gossip.”
- Ali Gomez

  • “’l’ll miss seeing Mei coming out of Art class on my way to AP History . . . You know, that’s just kind of scratching the surface.”
- Justin Wexler

  • “I’m not about the past. I’m ready to move on, baby.”
- Tyler Barso

  • “I can honestly say I will miss that face Principal Dunnan makes when he’s angry, with the scrunched-up eyebrows and his eyes bugging out. That always makes me smile.”
      Jesse Richter

  • “I’ll miss hanging out with my friends the most. Hopefully we won’t all lose touch in college.”
– Jordan Lundley

  • “Pizza. People say they’ll have pizza at college, but I’m not so sure.”
          – Rolo

So maybe you didn’t have as much luck with the ladies this year as you’d hoped.

No? Just me?

Either way, I’m really looking forward to the future. At college, you can totally re-invent yourself. New people, new places, nobody remembering that time you wet your pants your freshman year, and best of all, nobody with photo evidence of it.

So here’s my advice on how to really step up your game in college and start off on the right foot:

  • On the first day of class, raise your hand to answer every question, even if you don’t know the answer. Then make a joke when the professor calls on you. Your professor will think you’re hilarious.
  • Refer to your new roommate constantly as your “fraternal twin”. Some people might find it cool. Some people might find it creepy. Either way – ice breaker!
  • Take up a new hobby and you’re guaranteed to meet new people! Research the hobby first to make sure they’re the kind of people you want to meet.
  • Treat High School like it was a dress rehearsal. Now it’s time to go on for real.

Brotegés, can you feel the Call of the Wild?  We’re talkin’ summer Locationships at the Beach!  Not just one or two, but more than your smart phone chip can hold.

The sun, sand and surf make the babes feel like they’re in some kind of on-screen teen romance, and you’re the supernatural force that doesn’t have to get all glittery in the sun.  You are Beach Ghost.  The apparition that disappears magically when the going gets too hot and the sunburns feel too real.

First, some ideas on how to meet and greet the ladies.

Get a job at the concession stand.  Every tanning lady gets hungry at some point.  Ask her if she wants an “extra side” of you with that order.  Gets them every time. As a rule of thumb, slip your # on her receipt.

Lunch break?  Take those 30 minutes to stroll the beach with a bottle of deluxe smelling coconut tanning oil.  Not the kind that smells like a dangling car air freshener.  The real kind.  Offer your services.  Every lady has a back.

Not a concession stand kind of guy?  Be a lifeguard!  Not only do you get a prime bird’s eye view of all those pretty towel loungers, you get to learn the fine (and life saving) art of mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. Just make sure it’s not your Aunt or a Grandma. Weird!

Don’t know how to surf?  No worries.  Neither did the Hoff.  A wetsuit and surfboard makes you look mysterious in any situation though.

Mr. Steinman’s 3rd period History Class this year might have tried to teach us that the Summer of Love went down in the 1960’s.

But we say the real Summer of Love is happening 2011.

Seniors are giddy at the sweet smell of impending freedom.
Or that’s the smell of burning chemicals from the science lab.
Either way, giddy.
In other news:
  • School is almost over. Though I’ve been over it for a while,
  • Memories last forever. Don’t forget to get your yearbook signed by people you’ll never see again.
  • If you’re sad about leaving Brookside, don’t hug me.
  • Seniors: Right now, the Freshman class is hard at work assembling a duplicate copy of you for their purposes. They will succeed.
  • Principal Dunnan give a speech at graduation. In that time, the world will turn, species will die and - if you’ve practiced like me - you can catch a serious nap.
  • I’m not the person you think I am. It probably goes the other way, too.
  • Yeah, that thing you heard about me is true – I care about something. Good thing school’s out tomorrow. My reputation will never recover.

Dear Last Week of School,

You came up fast. Of course, once Prom happened, how could you top that?

Smart, Last Week of School – go out on top!

Yes, I look forward to a responsibility free vacation, but this summer offers more. This summer is a stepping-stone to sophomore year. And sophomore year is a stepping-stone towards Prom eligibility, like in ball sports or something.

Next year I enter the halls of Brookside a proud sophomore, knowing my hard work as a freshman has gotten me one step closer towards attending my very own Prom.

Summer break will be amazing . . . but, secretly, I’m already looking forward to next fall.

Love,

Tess

P.S. I’m overlooking the whole “exams” thing, okay?

That Prom thing happened. And it was pretty sweet. I’m pretty sure I got an “A.”

It was also pretty romantic. There were twinkle lights and they played slow music. Lots of people were making out on the dance floor. That’s romance.

Something like Prom can take couples straight to “next level” status, you know? And if you’re Seniors . . . well that just might mean a long-distance situation.

I’ve been working one of those myself. My lady Athena lives up in Canada . . . but that’s coming to an end now.

Oh, wait. I meant that it’s coming to an end because I’m heading up to Canada. Not that it’s coming to an end because of us breaking up.

I hope she didn’t read that one line and then stop reading and start crying or get angry because she thinks we’re broken up.

Oh man.

I’m just going to post this and then call her and make sure our situation is still rocksteady.

Later.

SENIORS! ONE MORE TIME!!!

Okay, folks. Let me start off with by addressing “the thing” that happened at Prom . . . it was no big thing at all.

You know, what can I say? I do take some responsibility for not giving the Senior class a moment they deserved.

But you can’t put people in a box, Brookside. We got to be us.

I know I’m a Big Fish in a Small Pond here, but I’m looking to the future. I know next year, I’ll be a Small Fish in a Big Pond. A Big Pond full of beautiful women. The future. Don’t fight it.

I know you all have had a lot of life success following Tyler’s Senior Rules. You’re welcome. But guess what? In college, there are no rules! Wha wha? You heard me. No rules.

But here? If you’re a Senior next year? You get to make the rules. Enjoy!

One last thing though, my parking spot is still my parking spot. At least until after the 10 year reunion.

SCHOOL’S OUT ON FRIDAY. WHAT’S NEXT?

“Sleep.”
– Ian Yang, Junior

“Sleep.”
– Scott Wheeler, Sophomore

“My mom wants me to get a job…but I’ll probably just sleep.”
– Randy Corbett, Freshman

“Thank You notes for graduation gifts. Ali’s doing FB messages, but I can’t do that. Then I’m going to pick out a nice frame for my diploma. Maybe some kind of shadow box so I can include my cap and tassle? Something mom and dad can feel proud about. Then I need to thing dorm decor. I’m feeling “purple and dusky rose” as a nice, cheery color scheme. I’ll be working this summer, but I’ve got to find a job first. It would be good to get started on the reading list for Freshman English.  I don’t know why that professor hasn’t e-mailed me back yet.  Am I too eager?  Some people, well a certain person, tells me to try and stay in the moment.  I’ll work on that too.”

Okay, so.

Here’s the thing about Prom.

Forget all about your expectations right when you walk through the door . . . because Prom is all about the moment.

I’ve spent so much time and energy imagining what that moment would be like.

And maybe I’ll spend the same time and energy thinking about what it was like.

But nothing . . . nothing is the same as the moment itself.

Forget your expectations and you’ll have a Prom that’s better than you ever imagined.

That’s Prom.

Well, I’ve got to wrap up here. Graduation. Summer Job. College. Yikes!

I’ve got a lot of planning to do.
