Over by the School Nurse’s Office, there’s this poster.
It’s a cat, clinging to a branch. And it says, “Hang in there.” It’s been there since I was a Freshman.
For three years, this cat has been following the poster’s advice.
And you know what? The cat’s life has not gotten any better.
What could possibly be underneath that cat that makes it ideal to spend an eternity clutching desperately to a broken branch? How horrible is that unseen thing lurking below? Is it a lava field? A time vortex? A hungry werewolf? What?
Then I realized. This is my life. I’m just hanging in there. I’m afraid to let go. Who knows? Something great might be down there. A time vortex? Okay, cool.
I’m letting go. I’m going to ask someone to Prom.
What’s the lesson here? Pay attention in school. You might learn something. Even in the hallway next to the Nurse’s Office.
But not in Algebra. That stuff is useless.
